Istanbul One killed, two wounded in Israel’s consulate shootout

One gunman was killed and two others wounded on Tuesday during a shootout with police outside the Israeli consulate in Istanbul, according to local authorities.

The clash also left two police officers with minor injuries, the regional governor confirmed, as security forces responded swiftly to the incident.

Turkish officials said the assailants had been identified and had arrived in the city from Izmit using a rental vehicle. Interior Minister Mustafa Ciftci disclosed that one of the attackers was linked to an organisation “exploiting the region,” though authorities have not officially named the group.

Local media reports suggested possible ties to the Islamic State (IS), which has previously been involved in violent confrontations with Turkish security forces, including a deadly attack in Yalova late last year.

Officials also revealed that one of the attackers—believed to be among two brothers involved in the incident—had a prior criminal record related to drug offences.

Security has since been tightened around the consulate as investigations continue into the motive and affiliations of the suspects.
