Following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, Iraq declared three days of mourning on Sunday.

In a statement, government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi stated that “with deep sorrow, we extend our condolences to the noble people of Iran and the entire Muslim world” after Khamenei was killed in “a blatant act of aggression”.

In addition to calling for an immediate end to military operations that “are driving the region to unprecedented levels of violence,” he said the government had declared three days of mourning.

In addition to supporting armed groups whose influence has increased both financially and politically, Iran has a considerable impact on Iraqi politics.

Iraq has served as a proxy battleground between the United States and Iran for many years.

According to the Coordination Framework, a ruling coalition of Shiite organisations with differing degrees of Iranian ties, “with deep sorrow and profound grief, we mourn the passing of the martyred leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei”.

His “blood will remain a guiding light for all generations” and “the curse will continue to haunt the murderous Zionists for all time”, the coalition added.

In a statement, prominent cleric Moqtada Sadr announced three days of mourning and said, “We extend our condolences to the Islamic world.”
