The death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been confirmed by the Iranian state media, raising questions of regional security and the future of the nation.

Khamenei’s demise was confirmed early on Sunday after President Donald Trump’s announcement hours earlier, with the US leader adding that it gave Iranians their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.

According to the state media, Khamenei, 86, was killed in an airstrike targeting his compound in downtown Tehran. The site was heavily bombarded, as seen via satellite photos from Airbus.

State TV said his office “showed that he consistently stood among the people and at the forefront of his responsibilities, confronting what officials call global arrogance”.

The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on Saturday, hitting targets across the country.

Iran has also countered with retaliatory strikes at Israel and US bases across the region.

BBC reports that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) disclosed that its strikes in Tehran targeted locations where senior political and security figures were gathered.
