International friendly: Onuachu, Lookman lead Eagles against Iran

Nigeria will face Iran in an international friendly on Friday evening at the Antalya Stadium in Turkey, with both sides entering the encounter under sharply contrasting circumstances.

While Iran—known as Team Melli—are grappling with off-field uncertainties despite securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Eagles arrive focused on rebuilding after their failure to reach the global showpiece.

Iran were among the earliest teams to book a place at the 2026 tournament, but their participation has been clouded by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Concerns have been raised over logistics and security, particularly regarding matches scheduled to be played in the United States, with the Iranian federation reportedly wary of potential risks.

On the pitch, Amir Ghalenoei’s side have struggled for form, failing to win their last three matches. They suffered a 2-1 defeat to Russia and were held to goalless draws by Cape Verde and Uzbekistan. Friday’s fixture offers an opportunity for Iran to regain momentum and restore confidence within a disrupted squad.

In contrast, Nigeria are still recovering from the disappointment of missing out on the 2026 World Cup following a playoff defeat to DR Congo on penalties. A subsequent appeal to FIFA was unsuccessful, confirming their absence from the tournament.

However, the Super Eagles have since shown signs of resurgence.

They secured a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, edging Egypt on penalties in the bronze medal match. Under head coach Eric Chelle, the team is now focused on long-term rebuilding, with this friendly serving as a key step in that process.

Nigeria head into the clash unbeaten in their last six matches across all competitions, indicating growing stability and renewed direction within the squad.

The fixture is part of a four-nation invitational tournament in Turkey, which also features Jordan and Costa Rica, and presents both teams with a valuable platform to test combinations and assess squad depth.

Historically, meetings between the two nations have been limited, with Nigeria holding a slight advantage—recording one win and one draw from previous encounters.
