The political dynamics in Akwa Ibom State took a new turn as the member representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Ime Bassey Okon, officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection, which took effect on June 6, 2025, followed wide consultations with constituents and political stakeholders, according to a statement personally signed by the lawmaker. He described his decision as a necessary step in response to the worsening internal crisis and prolonged factionalism that continue to plague the PDP.

Rt. Hon. Okon stated that the PDP no longer offers a viable platform for responsive governance or credible representation, citing its structural collapse and lack of direction. “This is not about personal interest,” he said. “It is about choosing a path that leads to real progress for my people and aligning with a national movement that is focused on growth and equity.”

The respected federal legislator affirmed his commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, applauding the administration’s efforts in driving reforms across critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, economic diversification, and youth empowerment.
