The 222 repentant influential youth who denounced violence after the Kano State Police arrested have chosen to become good ambassadors and were granted amnesty by the state government.
Commissioner of Police, Mr Usaini Gumel, said: “All the 222 influential youths surrendered themselves were properly profiled. Government organised training for them in various skills acquisition programmes.
“The 50 selected constabularies were drafted from each of the local governments that form Kano Metropolis comprising; Dala, Fagge, Ungogo and Gwale. They have successfully completed the two months intake training as Nigeria Police Special Constabularies.
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf who gave them amnesty directed us to profile them and find out where they can fit in for skills acquisition and empowerment. Out of the 222 influential youths, 50 of them volunteered to help the police in fighting crime and criminal activities. The command remains committed to protecting the lives and properties of residents.
“I don’t have the power to conduct any recruitment. It is only the Police Service Commission (PSC) that has power to conduct recruitment into Nigeria Police Force. My duty is to arrest criminals terrorising the state, investigate and charge such criminals to court.
“My vision is to imbibe community policing. This the command achieved by arresting the 222 repentant youth. They surrendered their weapons and ready to serve their communities. They are to assist the police to flush out criminals.
“The PSC in consultation and the Inspector General of Police will ensure that the uniforms of the constabularies are clearly differentiated from that of the regular police to identity crisis. They will be assigned specific roles in the nation’s security architecture.
“The operations of the special constabularies are covered and recognised by the Police Act. They are readily useful and needed now that the nation is fighting to end the siege of criminals on the country. PSC is touch with the command and aware that the use of the constabulary is to support the police in building a crime-free in Kano State.
“The constabularies are posted to their localities where they will be in a better position to fish out the criminals. The commission is also aware that the constabularies received adequate training and are working in their local government areas as required by law.
“In these ‘ember’ months, we have arrested over 1,230 suspected criminals and recovered over 671 mobile phones. The suspects will soon be charged to court.”
