As Nigeria accelerates its journey into the global digital economy, a new generation of machine learning mentors is helping shape the country’s technical future. Among them is Odunayo Mercy Babatope, an AI engineer and data scientist whose work in training Nigerian youth is contributing to the country’s rapidly expanding machine learning ecosystem.

Through her role as a Data Science and Machine Learning Mentor in the Federal Government’s 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, Babatope is helping equip young Nigerians with the technical skills needed to thrive in artificial intelligence, data science, and advanced analytics.

Nigeria’s 3MTT initiative was launched as part of a national strategy to train three million technical professionals in digital skills, including data science, machine learning, and cloud computing. The program aims to address the country’s digital skills gap while preparing a workforce capable of supporting emerging technologies and innovation-driven economic growth.

Research on Nigeria’s digital transformation highlights the importance of initiatives like 3MTT in bridging skill shortages and strengthening the country’s technological capabilities. Studies emphasize that developing expertise in artificial intelligence and machine learning is crucial for Nigeria’s competitiveness in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and for expanding opportunities for young professionals across sectors.

Within this national effort, Babatope plays a direct role in mentoring learners, guiding them through the principles of data science, machine learning modeling, and practical AI applications.
Babatope brings extensive industry experience to her mentorship role. According to her professional background, she has worked across several international and Nigerian technology organizations, applying machine learning to real-world problems.

She currently serves as an AI Engineer at iRecharge Tech Innovations, where she has developed intelligent systems that automate processes and enhance digital service delivery. Her work includes building AI-powered chatbots, designing computer vision models to classify payment receipts, and deploying scalable machine learning services using cloud technologies such as AWS.

Earlier in her career, she worked as a Data Scientist at iHealth and Wellness Foundation, where she built predictive models to analyze healthcare data and identify disease risk patterns using algorithms such as XGBoost, Random Forest, and neural networks.

This blend of industry experience and technical expertise allows her to translate complex machine learning concepts into practical skills for aspiring engineers.

In her mentorship role within the 3MTT program, Babatope works with Nigerian learners to:
Understand the foundations of data science and machine learning
Build predictive models using Python-based tools
Learn modern AI frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch
Apply machine learning to real-world problems
Develop projects that prepare them for careers in technology

This kind of mentorship is increasingly important in Nigeria’s technology landscape. Studies have shown that training programs in AI and data science significantly improve digital competence and help close skill gaps in emerging technology sectors.

By combining theoretical instruction with project-based learning, Babatope helps students transition from beginners to industry-ready practitioners.
Strengthening Nigeria’s Position in the Global AI Ecosystem

Nigeria has emerged as one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology hubs, with strong demand for professionals skilled in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics.

However, experts note that talent development remains one of the country’s biggest challenges. Programs like 3MTT — supported by mentors such as Babatope, are designed to address this gap by scaling technical education nationwide.

Her work reflects a broader movement across Africa: empowering local talent to design AI solutions for regional challenges, from healthcare analytics to financial technology and digital infrastructure.

As Nigeria continues to invest in digital skills development, professionals like Odunayo Babatope represent a new generation of AI educators and practitioners bridging industry expertise with community impact.

Through her mentorship, technical contributions, and industry experience, Babatope is helping cultivate the next wave of machine learning engineers who will drive innovation in Nigeria’s

technology sector.
In doing so, she is not only teaching algorithms and models — she is helping shape the future of artificial intelligence in Africa.
