Residents of Ojuelegba, Lagos, were thrown into panic on Monday evening when suspected assassins launched a deadly attack on a banker, Mr. Olakunle Solebo, around Karimu Street, Ojuelegba Lagos.
Eyewitnesses told The Sun that the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. when the gunmen ambushed Solebo’s vehicle. The attackers were said to have opened fire on the car, targeting both Solebo and his driver.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the driver reportedly tried to evade the assailants but was shot several times. The vehicle subsequently lost control and crashed into an electric pole, causing severe damage to the front of the car.
Passersby and sympathizers at the scene were said to have rushed to the wrecked vehicle moments after the attack. The driver who was unconscious and Solebo, who was described as barely conscious, were pulled from the car and hurriedly taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The condition of the driver, however, could not be immediately confirmed as of press time.
When The Sun contacted members of Solebo’s family, a source who pleaded anonymity, expressed strong suspicion regarding the motive behind the attack. The source alleged that the gunmen might have been acting on behalf of a powerful politician.
According to the family source, Solebo had allegedly faced mounting threats following his reported role in exposing corruption within the bank where he worked.
“He has been receiving death threats for some time now. We believe this attack may not be unconnected with certain powerful individuals he offended by exposing financial irregularities,” the source said.

The source further lamented what was described as the inability of security agencies to provide protection despite repeated complaints.
“It is painful that nothing concrete was done even after several cries for help. He had reported the threats, yet no adequate protection was provided,” the source added.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the police were made. When contacted, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dolapo Badmos, confirmed that an incident had indeed occurred but stated that she had yet to receive full details.
“I am aware of the incident; however, I am yet to be fully briefed. I will provide more information once I have been properly updated,” Badmos told our correspondent.
As at the time of filing this report, The Sun had not received further updates from the police regarding arrests or the circumstances surrounding the attack.
