2027: Don’t take politicians’ promises at face value, Shehu Sani warns Nigerians

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has warned Nigerians against taking campaign promises by politicians at face value, urging voters to scrutinise the records, motives and credibility of those seeking their votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sani, in a post on his Facebook page yesterday, listed 15 promises he said Nigerians should be wary of believing from what he described as “bourgeoisie politicians.”

His warning comes amid heightened political activities and realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with political parties and presidential aspirants unveiling policy proposals and making fresh promises to voters.

Among the promises Sani urged Nigerians to scrutinise are claims by politicians that they would never defect from their political parties, serve only one term in office or restructure the country.

He also listed promises to favour particular ethnic or religious groups, avoid borrowing, reject dealings with the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, and resist Western interests.

Others include pledges to restore fuel subsidy, avoid increasing taxes and achieve parity between the naira and the United States dollar.

Sani also cautioned Nigerians against readily believing promises that politicians would allow the National Assembly to elect its leaders without interference, sell the presidential fleet and travel on commercial airlines.

Promises to protect freedom of speech, resist privatisation of public assets and provide free education at all levels were also among those he listed.

The former senator urged Nigerians to apply their reasoning before accepting such declarations, stressing that political promises should be measured against the past conduct and track records of the politicians making them.

His intervention comes as the 2027 election campaign gathers momentum, with the economy, security, education, healthcare, restructuring, taxation and the management of public resources emerging as major areas of contest among political parties and candidates.
