The 1996 set of St. Gregory’s College, Obalende, Lagos, has donated a solar power system to the school’s science block as part of activities marking its 30th anniversary.
The project was formally presented to the school on Saturday evening by members of the set’s project committee, in the presence of alumni who travelled from different parts of Nigeria and abroad to participate in the anniversary celebration.
Head of the Project Committee, Soji Williams, said the initiative was designed to provide reliable electricity to the science block and create a more conducive environment for teaching, learning and other academic activities.
“It’s a dream come through because we are creating an atmosphere for the young generation of our time to relax, study, take lectures and understand the right and necessary amenities needed to make education interesting and worth going for,” Williams said.
Receiving the project on behalf of the school, Bishop Martin Igbadumhe commended the 1996 set for the initiative and urged other alumni sets to support the institution in similar ways.
“It is a laudable project and we appreciate this wonderful initiative, which is a big boost to the school. If every set takes steps like this, St. Gregory’s College will be a much better place,” he said.
The donation formed part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the 1996 set.
The celebrations began on Friday with a Jumat prayer and continued on Saturday with a novelty football match between the 1995 and 1996 sets, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Other activities included a health talk, dinner and a thanksgiving service on Sunday.
Chairman of the Planning Committee, Peter Essien, expressed delight at the turnout of members of the set, particularly those who travelled from outside the country to attend the reunion.
“We never anticipated the turnout, especially because many people came from abroad just to be part of the celebration. It was a glorious reunion and it all went well,” Essien said.
