Gunmen have abducted the principal of Government Secondary School, Odo-Ekina, four students writing the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO) examination and one NECO ad hoc staff member during an attack on the school in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, while candidates were sitting for their examination, according to the Kogi State Police Command.
Confirming the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Salisu Oyiza, said the assailants invaded the school and whisked away six people.
“During the incident, four students, the school principal and one NECO ad hoc staff member were abducted by the attackers,” Oyiza said.
She disclosed that security agencies responded immediately, launching a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving the police and other security operatives.
According to her, one of the abducted students has already been rescued, while efforts are continuing to secure the safe release of the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“A combined team of the police and other security agencies immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation and is currently on the trail of the assailants.
“So far, one of the abducted students has been rescued, while efforts are ongoing to secure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and apprehend the perpetrators,” she stated.
The police spokesperson added that the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, Naziru Kankarofi, alongside the Brigade Commander and the State Security Adviser to the Governor, was heading to the community for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation.
She noted that the command would provide additional information as investigations and rescue operations progress.
The latest incident adds to growing security concerns in parts of Kogi State, where cases of abduction have continued to pose a threat to residents, travellers and educational institutions, despite ongoing security operations across the state.
