God hears Tinubu’s prayers more than He hears the whining and wailings of Nigerians, and I think it is time for Nigerians to change their prayer points to be in tandem with that of the president. And here are why!
Tinubu waited patiently for the Lord; He inclined unto him and heard his prayers. Forget that pastor that said he went to heaven, saw God and drank tea with Him. Tinubu was the one who went to heaven, waited patiently and drank tea with Him. In that meeting, he gave the Lord a laundry of his wish list and He inclined to him and heard his prayers to purchase new presidential jets, build presidential mansions and live a luxurious life that in no way support the logic that Nigeria is broke.
It was Tinubu who went to heaven, drove a gold and diamond-plated Range Rover, not that pastor that made the fabulous claim. Forget the predictions of those fake prophets and primates’ that ‘Tinubu has no solution to Nigeria’s problems.’
Tinubu knows Nigeria’s problems and has the solution, only that he lacks the courage to apply the Chinese model. Some said the cabals have pocketed him, an allegation he denies. How can a few cabals pocket the Capo-de-Capi of cabals? Impossible!
God settled Tinubu with Nigeria as his farmland. God made him president and appointed unto him to rule over us. Imagine, emerging from all the crises of identity that dogged his career to become the first citizen. If not God, who else can make a champion of someone with such enormous baggage?
Tinubu’s ascension to power wasn’t all rosy. For the many years that he plotted his way to power, he suffered disappointments, dissension and betrayals but God perfected his ways. I don’t know how many people that God has blessed like President Tinubu, including those sorcerers with God’s direct hotlines.
At the appointed time, when the trumpet sounded, he casually proclaimed ‘it is my turn’. While others were labouring in vain and parading glossy manifestos, Tinubu inclined to God and cried ‘Emi lo kan’. God heard his cry and gave him his turn.
Against all obstacles, INEC declared him the winner and the Supreme Court sanctioned the declaration after some people went to court to challenge the outcome. God hears Tinubu’s prayers!
When it was almost certain as the daylight that Tinubu would be president he went back to God and made the supplication that he wanted to continue with Buhari’s legacy. God paused for a while to be sure his new anointed president understood very well what he was asking for.
The Buhari regime was a nightmare that is better forgotten. But here is our newly minted president praying to continue from where Buhari stopped. Under Buhari, people suffered untold hardship, the economy was dilapidated, the security was challenged and overstretched. Both imaginable and unimaginable things happened? At a point, the people having had enough went on rampage: #ENDSARS. Every reasonable person wanted an end to the dysfunctional and repressive regime.
The Holy Book teaches us that God grants our heart’s desires according to our prayers. Irrespective of the fact that majority of Nigerians wanted nothing to do with Buhari era, God still answered Tinubu’s prayers. To play Buhari, the heart has to be dead, so, God hardened Tinubu’s heart.
On delivering his inaugural address on the 29th of May 2023, it was planted in his heart to proclaim the removal of petroleum subsidy without preparation and putting adequate support measures in place. Within hours of the pronouncement, the Naira tumbled, gasoline and gas prices surged, and cost of food items skyrocketed, thus calling to question his ability to make proper economic decisions. We had farmer-herders’ clashes during Buhari which resulted in low harvest as farmers could not go to farms. While the new president fiddled, insecurity expanded. Today, no part of Nigeria is safe even as we battle food insecurity.
In continuing with Buhari’s legacy of mindless borrowing, the president embraced IMF and all the inherent international dirty politics. Rather than protect and defend the Naira, he floated the Naira hence the free fall of the local currency. IMF got him where they wanted us. No country had survived IMF interference. It’s not normal for the street boy not to mind the streets. When the UK and the US back your economic reforms, please find out how many of IMF advice they have implemented. Most successful leaders take care of its domestic affairs before pandering to international monetary dirty politics for validation.
Believing he can tax Nigeria to prosperity, the president hiked electricity tariff and increased interest rate by 26.75 per cent. That is the most foolish thing to do in the face of rising unemployment and galloping inflation which rose from 22.8 per cent in 2023 to 34.2 per cent in June 2024, thus putting Nigeria among the top 10 countries with the highest inflation rate in the world and Africa.
The hike in interest rate means that most private sector businesses will close down as no business can survive with interest rate at about 30 per cent.
Whatever President Tinubu is doing, God has settled him with Nigeria, and as such, he must not allow this roof to fall. Whether he accepts the people’s justifiable anger or not, the bitter truth is that those knocking him are unhappy, hungry and angry with his failed policies.
As elites, we ought to be ashamed that we are not providing better future for our children. If bad governance continues, the government may have to contend with more future uprisings. It is not enough to argue that this protest is sponsored by opposition parties. I wonder what he expects from opposition parties who believed he snatched the election and was awarded their scores. As opposition leader, Tinubu was the Agitator-in-Chief. He pummelled previous administrations, including the military, beyond repair.
On 4th August 2024, President Tinubu spoke to Nigerians in response to the youth protests across the country. He made a great speech, perhaps, the best he could under the circumstances, but fell short of addressing the root cause of the uprising. He blamed everyone but himself.
While violent protest remains condemnable, I expected the president to recognise the people’s right to protest and come hard against brutal crackdown against peaceful protesters by security agents. I saw an online video where the security agent executed a defenceless protester in Azare, Bauchi. In a related incident, the military admitted the extra judicial killing of a16-year-old boy in Zaria, Kaduna State. These deaths were avoidable. The president also failed to address the key issues that will mitigate current hardships. As president he must not be conflicted in making very important economic decisions, such as gasoline importation. It still makes no sense to a lot of Nigerians that the country is importing refined petrol. We must make our national refineries to work, encourage private local refineries to work, end oil theft and corruption.
The president must address the corruption in the energy sector which had led to high electricity tariffs. All he needs do is the courage to review the gas supply contract in a way that we pay for what we consume. The ‘take it or leave it’ contract in place is the reason why we have the electricity subsidy cabals just like we have the petroleum subsidy cabals.
The president may mean well but meaning well is not the same as doing well! He must show he is the leader that fits the moment. I will expect him to reverse the high interest rate downwards. When you have galloping inflation and high rate of unemployment, it is not normal to hike interest rates. The collapse of the private sector throw more people out of jobs and wipe off the middle class. The people obviously do not want further handouts, especially where such interventions are not delivering desirable impacts. Thankfully, it has been proven that some states are either hoarding the presidential palliatives or diverting to their cronies. Finally, the president as a matter of urgent importance, need to change his prayer points, especially the one where he prayed to continue with Buhari’s legacy of pains, hardship and deaths. That prayer point is not in our interest. Nigerians wants Tinubu as in Bola Ahmed Tinubu, not Tinubu as in President Muhammadu Buhari. He must be his own man; accept full responsibilities for his failed policies and do everything humanly possible to ensure this roof does not to crash on his head. It is my turn and I have spoken.
