A weeklong celebration of Afrobeats tagged: ‘Lagos Global Afrobeats Kulture Festival (GAKFEST)’ will take place in the City of Excellence from December 3-10, 2023.
Organised by leading creative economy company, Inspiro Productions, the show will spread across two iconic venues – Bay Lounge Waterfront and Lekki Coliseum, both in Lekki, Lagos.
Afrobeats is one of the fastest growing music genres in the world with trailblazers undoubtedly Nigerians and Lagos its global capital. According to the Chief Executive Officer, Inspiro Productions, Ayoola Sadare, GAKFEST is part of a multi-city music, arts and culture extravaganza kicking off in Lagos and moving to other major cities of the world.
“GAKFEST is positioned to be one of the most prominent events on the African cultural calendar, and a spectacular celebration of Nigerian and African music, dance, art and culture; showcasing the city’s role as a global hub for Afrobeats while promoting cultural diversity, unity and artistic expression.
“The event offers a multi-dimensional experience that celebrates the essence of Afrobeats, fosters cultural exchange, and reinforces Lagos’ position as a vibrant cultural destination. It incorporates music performances, dance, fashion, art and photo exhibitions, masterclasses and workshops, next rated talent hunt, pop-up marketplace and others. Beyond a music festival, GAKFEST is a celebration of creativity that taps into the pulse of Lagos, showcasing the vibrancy and talent embedded in Nigeria’s cultural DNA.
“As a company deeply rooted in the fabric of Lagos and Nigerian entertainment, we birthed GAKFEST to create an annual touring spectacle that not only spotlights the brilliance of Afrobeats, but also champions the development of our local creative economy and exports it. This festival is a platform for emerging talents and a source of pride for our city and nation,” Sadare said.
This year’s theme: ‘Redefining National Migration Initiatives by Developing the Local Creative Economy’ reflects the organiser’s commitment to addressing current challenges.
“The creative economy is a potent force against the pervasive ‘Japa’ culture, providing avenues for self-expression, innovation and economic empowerment. Lagos GAKFEST injects vitality into the Nigerian spirit, attracting local and international attention. Beyond the cultural spectacle, the festival generates economic opportunities, supports local businesses, reinforces and positions Lagos as the Afrobeats capital of the world,” Sadare noted.
