The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported that 5,281 road traffic crashes occurred in Nigeria from January to June 2025, resulting in 2,838 deaths. The crashes involved 39,793 people, with 17,818 individuals rescued during the same period.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, noted that these figures reflect a 3.9% increase in crashes and a 2.2% rise in fatalities compared to the same period in 2024. The briefing was part of the FRSC’s 2025 Half-Year Strategy Session to assess progress and recalibrate operations for greater impact.

“It is also on record that during the same period, FRSC operatives arrested 290,887 traffic offenders for committing 319,798 offences.

“Meanwhile, 250,720 offenders were arrested and 271,895 offences recorded in 2024. This reflects a 16 per cent rise in arrests and a 14.9 per cent increase in offences booked,” he said.

According to him, the increase in the percentage of arrests and offences did not reflect FRSC as a weakened institution.

“On the contrary, it affirms that the Corps is more vigilant and responsive to ensuring safety through visible enforcement,” he noted.

In addition, he said that in the period under review, over 30 million passengers travelled, adding that the Corps is working to ensure safety through visible enforcement.

“The volume of vehicles and passengers using 2.3 million vehicles across the national road network.

“It also called for more effort from our operatives to meet up with the expectations for safety by the motoring public.

“For instance, Anambra and Kano States alone accounted for over 6.5 million passengers, representing 22 per cent of the total passenger travels.

“These figures clearly demonstrate that the scale of road usage is quite high, with attendant pressure on the road infrastructure and on our workforce.

“Let me state unequivocally that FRSC is not overwhelmed. The Corps is a resilient and committed agency rising to meet the growing national challenge with professionalism and innovation,” he added.
