The Federal Government has unveiled a new national textbook ranking system for primary and secondary schools, in a major effort to improve the quality of learning materials used in classrooms across Nigeria.

The policy, announced by Minister of Education Tunji Alausa, will take effect from the September 2026 academic session and is aimed at ending the widespread use of substandard and poorly aligned textbooks in schools.

Under the new framework, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will not only approve textbooks but also rank them based on quality, relevance and compliance with the national curriculum.

The ranking process will be handled by standing subject committees made up of experts, who will assess submitted books for academic accuracy, clarity, pedagogical value and alignment with national education standards.

Only the highest-ranked textbooks in each subject and class category will be approved for use in schools, a move expected to streamline textbook selection and eliminate the confusion caused by the large number of competing titles.

The government said any textbook that fails to secure a ranking under the new system will no longer be permitted in classrooms, regardless of whether it had previously received approval.

Officials say the reform is designed to strengthen quality assurance, improve learning outcomes and ensure that pupils across the country have access to reliable and standardised instructional materials.

The Ministry of Education will also launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign ahead of implementation to ensure schools, teachers, publishers and other stakeholders fully understand and comply with the new policy.
