FCT Election Day: Mixed reports of readiness, apathy amid reforms

INEC-Votes

From Juliana Taiwo-Obalonye, Abuja

Live radio coverage from Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections on February 21, 2026, revealed polling units gearing up with INEC reforms like electronic accreditation and result transmission, though voter apathy and logistics snags tempered optimism.

At Polling Unit 036 near Chief’s Palace in Garki, INEC staff were fully prepared with voter registers posted, supported by police, civil defense, and immigration officers, as residents queued early—some even selling snacks to voters. While nearby Unit 037 adhoc staff lacked chairs and tables to use, turning to party agents despite INEC budgets.

At Unit 118 in EFAB estate was empty even though 755 voters are expected, with officials and security personnel standing idle, contrasting busier Units of 078 in Area 8 where 1,009 voters are expected to vote.
Apathy was blamed on missing PVCs, unprocessed transfers, and power cuts in Garki FHA estate.
