Ahead of its 34th Combined Convocation and Endowment Ceremony scheduled for Friday, June 26, the Federal College of Education Eha-Amufu, Enugu State, has announced that a total of 1,569 graduating students will be awarded Degree and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) certificates during the event.

The Provost of the institution, Prof. Pauline Ngozi Ikwuegbu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing held at the College as part of activities marking the commencement of the convocation ceremony.

According to the Provost, the combined convocation covers graduating sets from 2019 to 2022, bringing together students who successfully completed their academic requirements for the award of Degree certificates, Professional Diploma in Education (PDE), and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE).

“As I stand before you today, I am reminded of the journey we began years ago, a journey defined by a vision to reposition FCE, Eha-Amufu as a premier centre for teacher education in Nigeria. The 34th Combined Convocation is combined because it brings together several graduating sets from 2019 to 2022 who have successfully completed their requirements for the award of Degree certificates, Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) certificates and Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE),” she said.

Providing a breakdown of the graduating students, Ikwuegbu revealed that 1,215 graduates will receive Degree certificates, while 354 students will be awarded NCE certificates, describing the figures as evidence of the improved academic standards institutionalized under her administration.

She described convocation as more than a ceremonial presentation of certificates, noting that it represents the public unveiling of years of academic rigour, research, and character formation, and added that the ceremony holds special significance for her personally, as it marks her final convocation as Provost of the College.

Reflecting on her tenure and the institution’s progress under her leadership, the Provost admitted that the journey had been both rewarding and challenging.

“When I assumed office as Provost, I made a covenant with the College academic community that I would leave FCE Eha-Amufu better than I met it. Today, I am happy that in the coming month, I will bow out, and I will do so with satisfaction that we have fought a good fight, finished this course of stewardship, and kept faith with the academic integrity and well-being of the College,” she stated.

Highlighting some of the achievements recorded during her administration, Ikwuegbu pointed to the successful transition of the institution into a degree-awarding college in affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, significant improvements in infrastructural development, and the increased number of academic staff members acquiring doctoral degrees.

She, however, acknowledged that insecurity and inadequate funding posed serious challenges to the institution’s growth. Despite this, she said the College management remained focused, crediting the collaborative support of both state and federal security agencies for ensuring a stable environment that allowed uninterrupted academic activities.

The Provost also expressed concern over the poor condition of the road linking the institution through Ikem, appealing to relevant authorities at different levels of government to intervene by improving road access and strengthening security infrastructure around the area.

Speaking further, Prof. Ikwuegbu commended media practitioners for their vital role in society but expressed concern over what she described as negative media experiences encountered during the final phase of her administration.

She urged Nigerian journalists to uphold professionalism by embracing fairness, objectivity, and balanced reporting as guiding principles of journalism practice.

The outgoing Provost also expressed appreciation to members of the College’s 7th Governing Council, led by Prince Melu-Bari Akekue, for providing policy direction and supporting her vision for the institution.

She equally thanked members of the College Management Team, teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as students, for their cooperation and support throughout her tenure.
