Nigerian designer Omosalewa Ogunjimi has been named the Real Leather. Stay Different. (RLSD) Africa 2026 Most Commendable Designer.
Ogunjimi emerged as the overall winner with her design, EXUVIA, which explores the human spine, ribcage and the natural process of moulting.
The design uses leather as part of the garment’s structure, incorporating modular elements that allow it to be transformed into different forms.
According to Ogunjimi, the design reflects her approach to combining structure, functionality and storytelling.
“EXUVIA is a reflection of my design language where structure, functionality and storytelling come together to create something distinct,” she said.
The 2026 African edition of the competition attracted designers from more than 12 African countries, with 15 finalists advancing to the final stage.
The finalists represented Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Uganda and competed across the Apparel, Accessories and Footwear categories.
Their designs were assessed by a six-member international judging panel based on individuality, conceptualisation, relevance, sustainability and commerciality.
Lead judge Preston Viswamo described Ogunjimi’s entry as “spectacular” and praised its modular design and prototyping.
Three of the five finalists in the Apparel category were Nigerians, with Ogunjimi joined by Clara Udegbe and Emeka Oguejiofor.
As the 2026 Africa winner, Ogunjimi is scheduled to represent the continent at the international RLSD competition in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 27 to 29.
The 15 African finalists are also expected to reunite in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in November for the RLSD Africa 2026 Continental Showcase, where winners in the remaining categories will be announced.
