Arsenal ended their 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, thanks to Kai Havertz’s first-half strike.
The German forward scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, heading home the opportunity created by Declan Rice to give Mikel Arteta’s side a crucial advantage.
The victory was Arsenal’s first league win at Liverpool’s home ground since 2012 and handed the defending champions a major boost in their title defence.
The Gunners moved three points clear at the top of the Premier League table, strengthening their position after Manchester City had also dropped points with a 1-0 defeat to Brighton on Saturday.
Arsenal’s triumph was particularly impressive following their disappointing League Cup exit in midweek, when they lost on penalties to fourth-tier Fleetwood.
Liverpool, managed by Andoni Iraola, struggled to break down Arsenal’s disciplined defence despite enjoying spells of possession and pushing forward in search of an equaliser.
The hosts failed to register a shot on target throughout the encounter, with goalkeeper David Raya enjoying a relatively quiet afternoon as Arsenal protected their narrow lead.
Arteta’s men defended resolutely in the closing stages, blocking Liverpool’s attempts and dealing comfortably with repeated crosses into the penalty area.
Raya received a yellow card for time-wasting in stoppage time as Arsenal sought to see out the contest.
Despite six minutes of added time, Liverpool could not find a breakthrough, allowing the visitors to celebrate a memorable victory at Anfield.
The result also underlined Arsenal’s defensive strength, with the Gunners recording their sixth clean sheet in nine Premier League matches this season.
