The recent inauguration of Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS) by Governor Peter Mbah has continued to receive encomium.
Managing Director of Powell Homes and Shelters Limited, Chibuikem Onyekachi, extolled the governor, saying the ultra-modern land management system offers unparalleled benefits to the real estate sector, particularly in streamlining the process of securing land titles.
With ENGIS, he posited, land applications could be processed online within 48 hours because the system eliminates the delays that often hinder property transactions. He added that this innovation not only reduces operational costs for developers and investors but also promotes a seamless property acquisition experience essential for boosting investors’ confidence.
Onyekachi further noted that the availability of precise geospatial data through ENGIS would revolutionise urban planning and development.
He explained that real estate developers and urban planners could now make informed decisions on land use, zoning, and project siting, saying that this level of data accuracy encourages strategic growth, while ensuring projects align with the broader objectives of sustainable urbanisation in the state.
He highlighted another key feature of ENGIS, which is its impact on the ease of obtaining construction permits, a crucial aspect for real estate developers.
“For us, the property developers, the system is a game-changer in resolving long-standing challenges, such as double allocations and unauthorised encroachments, as it provides a centralised, verifiable database of land records, thus ensuring that property ownership disputes are minimised, thereby creating a reliable environment for transactions. This reliability is critical for long-term planning and project execution in the real estate industry.
“The digitisation and automation of these processes enable ENGIS to remove bureaucratic barriers that make the speeding up of project timelines impossible. It will also enable developers to focus on delivering quality housing and commercial infrastructure.
“The economic impact of ENGIS cannot be overstated, as it ensures efficiency and transparency in revenue collection from land-related activities, boosts the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and fosters a business-friendly environment for real estate sector stakeholders, which will ultimately attract both local and international investors,” Onyekachi stated.
