Electoral Act: Opposition’s call for review hollow, says Lagos APC

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has dismissed opposition demands for a fresh amendment to the Electoral Act 2022, describing the agitation as “hollow” and lacking constructive substance.

In a statement issued in Lagos, the party’s spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said the opposition’s push does not reflect serious democratic engagement but rather political posturing.

“What Nigerians are witnessing is not principled advocacy for reform, but a display of ineptitude by opposition politicians whose understanding of democracy begins and ends with rhetoric, press conferences, and protests,” the statement read.

The party argued that meaningful reform should be pursued within the legal framework already established by the National Assembly of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission, instead of through what it called repeated public outcry.

APC further maintained that opposition parties should first strengthen their internal structures and grassroots presence before faulting electoral outcomes. “Expecting victory without preparation or organisation is not democratic activism; it is political fantasy,” Oladejo said.

The Lagos APC added that any future review of Nigeria’s electoral framework must be guided by national interest, empirical evidence and respect for institutions, urging opposition figures to focus on presenting credible alternatives to Nigerians rather than, in its words, engaging in “hollow” agitation.
