Residents of Ekpoma in Edo have called for the immediate reconstruction of the dilapidated Ekpoma-Auchi section of the Benin-Okene highway.
The residents under the aegis of Ekpoma Concerned Stakeholders, made the appeal in a communique issued after their meeting in Ekpoma.
In the communique made available, on Thursday, in Benin-City, the residents urged the Federal Ministry of Works to direct the contractor handling the project to return to site.
According to the residents, the Benin-Auchi axis of the road, constructed in the early 70s “is now in its worst state and un-motorable.
“It has also affected the socioeconomic activities of the people.’’
According to the communique, no meaningful work has been done since the contract for the dualisation and repair of the road was awarded by the federal government.
The residents, therefore, urged the Edo Government to intervene by repairing parts of the road that were worst affected, as criminals take advantage of the bad state of the road to terrorise motorists and residents.
The residents also called on all security agencies in the area to help address the increasing rate of crime in Ekpoma and its environs.
Most times long queues stretching over two kilometers manifest from Ambrose Ali University to Upenu junction due to the bad state of the road. (NAN)
