Operatives of the Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arrested 28 suspected internet fraudsters on Wednesday, May 14, at various locations in Benin City, Edo State.
EFCC Spokesman Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrests on Thursday, stating that the operation was based on credible intelligence linking the suspects to fraudulent internet activities. Items recovered include five exotic cars, smartphones, and laptops.
“They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” Oyewale said.
This crackdown follows a pattern of EFCC operations in Edo State, with 47 arrests in Benin City on April 15, 2025, and 19 on April 12, 2025, reflecting the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat internet fraud, commonly known as “yahoo-yahoo”.
