Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman, Board of the National Credit Guarantee Company Limited (NCGC), Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, CFR, has joined Nigerians in celebrating the former Head of State, General Yakubu Dan-Yumma Gowon, GCFR, on his 91st birthday.

Dogara described the former leader as the conscience of a nation — a man whose life and leadership continue to define what true service and patriotism mean in Nigeria’s history.

He said General Gowon’s stewardship during one of the country’s most critical moments saved the nation from disintegration and laid the moral foundation for unity and reconciliation.

“General Gowon’s name is written in gold among those who placed national interest above personal ambition,” Dogara said. “He led with humility, ruled with compassion, and stepped aside with grace — qualities that remain rare in our public life today.”

Dogara also commended the former Head of State for remaining steadfast in his faith and for using his influence to promote peace through the Nigeria Prays movement, describing him as a spiritual statesman and a symbol of moral courage.

“Even after decades out of office, General Gowon’s voice still commands respect because it is guided by truth and purity of heart,” he said. “His legacy reminds every Nigerian that leadership is about sacrifice, not self-service.”

Dogara prayed that God would continue to strengthen the elder statesman with long life, health, and peace, noting that his wisdom and integrity remain a moral compass for both present and future generations.

“On behalf of all who cherish integrity and nationhood, I celebrate General Yakubu Gowon at 91 — a leader, a patriot, and a father to the nation,” Dogara concluded.
