Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama made a strong case for supporting Kamala Harris in her presidential bid against Donald Trump, on the second night of the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.

Mr Obama emphasized Harris’s historic candidacy as the first black and South Asian woman running for US president, urging Americans to embrace change.

The ex-president complimented Joe Biden and denounced Trump, calling Biden a champion of democracy. He urged delegates to concentrate on the future with Harris, remarking that “history will remember Joe Biden as a president who defended democracy at a moment of great danger.”

Michelle Obama echoed her husband’s sentiments, warning that Trump would attempt to distort Harris’s record, much like he has done in the past. She highlighted the importance of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

Harris joined virtually from Milwaukee, criticising Trump’s support for the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade. Prioritizing abortion rights as a major campaign topic, she underlined the necessity of accountability at the voting booth.

Notably, former Trump allies, such as Stephanie Grisham, spoke at the convention, expressing their disillusionment with the former president. Republican Mayor John Giles of Mesa, Arizona, urged voters to reject Trump’s influence, recalling the bipartisan spirit of John McCain.

Outside the venue, protests over US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza briefly turned violent. Senator Bernie Sanders called for a ceasefire, addressing the ongoing conflict amid the convention’s proceedings.
