DNC Night 3: Walz rallies democrats, vows victory with Harris

Democrat Vice Presidential Candidate Tim Walz

The Democratic National Convention in Chicago saw a night of powerful speeches and emotional moments, with Vice Presidential nominee Tim Walz taking centre stage on the third day.

The Minnesota Governor, relatively unknown nationally just weeks ago, delivered a rousing speech.

With chants of “Coach, Coach, Coach!” he energised the audience by confessing, “I have delivered a lot of pep talks,” drawing on his experience as a former high school football coach.

Walz emphasised his commitment to core Democratic values, advocating for a nation where children have enough to eat, healthcare and housing are considered fundamental rights, and personal freedoms are protected. “And the government stays the hell out of your bedroom,” he declared, addressing Republican stances on social issues.

Former President Bill Clinton urged voters to “count the I’s” when listening to Donald Trump, highlighting what he characterised as the Republican candidate’s self-serving nature. Oprah Winfrey, identifying as an independent voter, made a surprise appearance, urging her fellow independents and undecided voters to prioritise “decency and respect.”

The events of January 6th, 2021, cast a sombre shadow over the proceedings. A chilling video depicting Trump’s speech before the Capitol riot was met with stunned silence. Olivia Troye, a former Trump administration official who quit after January 6th, issued a warning that Trump was actively attempting to undermine the legitimacy of the 2024 election.

Republican former lieutenant governor of Georgia Geoff Duncan sent a strong message to his colleagues in his party, imploring them to “dump Trump” and put the country first. He proclaimed, “If you vote for Kamala Harris in 2024, you’re not a Democrat, you’re a patriot.”

Vice President Harris’s entry into the race has changed its dynamic, despite surveys at first showing Biden lagging Trump. According to recent surveys, Harris is leading her Republican opponent in a number of crucial swing states.

After making an impassioned plea for their son’s release, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an American prisoner held by Hamas, were met with chants of “Bring Them Home” and a standing ovation. Meanwhile, a sit-in was organised by activists outside the conference hall to express disapproval at the absence of a Palestinian speaker from the schedule.
