In a bid to expand access to higher education in Kano State, the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, has announced 1,000 scholarships to students in Kano Central and Kano South Senatorial Districts.
The scholarships, which will be disbursed through the Barau I Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), are specifically for those studying Information and Communication Technology-related degree courses.
Beneficiaries will be among the first set of students to enrol at seven newly established centres of the Federal University, Dutsin-ma, Katsina State. The centres, facilitated by Senator Barau, will be located in Madobi, Kiru, Tudun Wada, Rano, Gaya, Dawakin Kudu, and Minjibir Local Government Areas.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser, Mr Ismail Mudashir, on Monday added that Barau finalised the arrangement with the university’s management, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Management Science and Acting Provost of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, Dr Jamilu Ajiya, over the weekend.
Sen. Barau had earlier facilitated the establishment of four study centres in Kano North Senatorial District, with over 1,000 students pursuing various degree programmes at the centres.
The senator expressed optimism that with the initiative, more educational opportunities will be provided in the 44 LGAs of the state.
“Education is the bedrock of the development of all nations. I will continue to work towards providing qualitative education to our people,” the Deputy President of the Senate, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said.
