Roberto De Zerbi has moved quickly to steady expectations at Tottenham Hotspur, stressing the size of the club while downplaying any notion that his arrival alone can fix a troubled season.
Appointed on March 31, the Italian steps into a dressing room low on confidence and a table that makes uncomfortable reading, with Spurs yet to win a league game in 2026 and edging closer to the relegation line. It is his first test in charge and it comes with little margin for error.
Ahead of his debut against Sunderland, De Zerbi made it clear he is not trying to outshine those who came before him, including Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.
“I am not better than Frank or Tudor because I consider them very good coaches,” he said. “I just try to bring my style, my character, and my personality to achieve our target.”
That target is straightforward but far from simple survival. Tottenham’s struggles this season have been less about individual quality and more about a lack of cohesion, something De Zerbi must address almost immediately.

“For me, it is a big opportunity because Tottenham are a very important club in the Premier League. I am proud and happy to be here, and I thank the club for their trust,” he added.
He also acknowledged the mood around the club, with supporters growing increasingly restless as results have dipped.
“The fans are suffering like us, but for them there is only one club. We have to make them happy with the right spirit and behaviour.”
The message is clear, but the real work begins on the pitch. With only a few matches left, Tottenham’s survival hopes now rest on how quickly De Zerbi can turn intent into results.
