Hundreds of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have strongly condemned the recent protest by the APC Akida Forum at the headquarters of the State Security Services (SSS) in Abuja, demanding an investigation into the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle.

The CSOs called the protest politically motivated and warned that it risks undermining Nigeria’s security framework.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Muhammad Kabiru, the National Secretary of the CSOs, expressed concern over the repeated protests, including those at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and now the SSS.

The CSOs believe the protests, based on unfounded accusations, are aimed at tarnishing the reputation of a dedicated public servant and could damage the country’s efforts to combat insecurity.

The protests stem from allegations that Matawalle, the former governor of Zamfara State, is linked to banditry and financial mismanagement. The CSOs dismissed the accusations as reckless and politically charged.

“We unequivocally condemn any attempt to politicize national security matters and accuse individuals without credible evidence,” said Kabiru.

He further stressed that the protests detract from more pressing national security issues, including the ongoing battle against terrorism and banditry in the country.

The CSOs called for investigations into allegations to follow due process and rely on substantial evidence, rather than being fueled by political motivations.

“We urged the security agencies to focus on their core mandate of safeguarding the lives and rights of Nigerians while upholding justice and fairness.

“We reaffirmed our support for Minister Matawalle, urging the public to remain vigilant against campaigns designed to undermine governance and the progress of the country under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
