Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has announced a minimum wage increase to 40,000 naira. The announcement was made during his Workers’ Day address at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
Governor Otu emphasised the importance of the workforce in driving the state’s development and achieving positive outcomes. He stated that the wage increase reflects the current economic realities and will be implemented with immediate effect.
However, the governor also addressed concerns about low productivity among state workers, estimated at only 5%. He urged workers to reciprocate the government’s gesture by doubling their efforts and warned that the administration may reconsider worker benefits if productivity does not improve.
The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Gregory Olayi, highlighted challenges faced by workers, including non-implementation of promotions, non-payment of gratuities, and delays in deductions from salaries. He urged the governor to prioritise addressing these issues.
The State Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Monday Ogbodum, presented the TUC’s demands, including a review of the policy-making school principal positions tenured.
