Cross River’s central command centre for disease outbreaks is in a state of disrepair, forcing the state government to order an immediate renovation to avert a possible collapse of its emergency response system.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, announced the approval of an urgent rehabilitation of the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) located along  Moore Road, Calabar, the Cross River State Capital.

Ayuk said the directive followed an assessment which revealed the facility’s poor state despite its critical role in disease surveillance, epidemic preparedness, and rapid response to public health emergencies.

He stated that Gov. Bassey Otu immediately directed that renovation work commence without delay to restore the centre to a safe, functional, and modern facility capable of effectively coordinating emergency responses across the state.

The Commissioner said the renovation will address structural deficiencies and provide a more conducive environment for emergency operations, data management, incident coordination, and collaboration among health professionals and development partners.

The rehabilitation of the PHEOC is expected to build a resilient healthcare system capable of preventing, detecting, and responding effectively to emerging public healthcare
