Former Cross River State Governor and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate, Donald Duke, has said President Bola Tinubu does not deserve another four years in office, citing what he described as poor governance and worsening hardship in the country.
Duke made the statement on Monday while appearing on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*, where he assessed Tinubu’s political standing ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Asked whether Tinubu is politically stronger than he was during the 2023 election, Duke said he disagreed, arguing that the President’s performance in office had eroded the goodwill he enjoyed at the time.
“I don’t think so. I think his governance has exposed the weakness of the contraption called. I don’t think he has the sympathies he had in 2023.”
The PRP candidate said the economic difficulties experienced by Nigerians had contributed to growing disillusionment with the administration.
“Things have gone harder for people, a lot of people are disillusioned by his style of governance, hope has turned into despair.”
Duke acknowledged Tinubu’s political experience and described him as a formidable politician but drew a distinction between political strategy and governance.
“Give it to him, he is a formidable politician, my issue with him is governance not politics.”
He maintained that Tinubu had performed poorly in governance during his time in office.
“He is weak on governance, from what we have seen over the last three years he is very weak on governance.”
Duke argued that the country could not afford another four years under the current administration, warning that continued increases in poverty would worsen the situation.
According to him, political structures may be important during elections, but economic realities could influence how Nigerians vote.
“Yes, you talk about structures and all that but I think on the election day they will be fighting for their own survival.”
The former governor said Tinubu’s current political position was different from the situation in 2023, when many Nigerians had greater optimism about his presidency.
Duke also described Nigeria as being in a serious situation as a result of what he characterised as poor governance and said Tinubu should not be given another term.
The PRP presidential candidate said he would offer Nigerians an alternative approach to governance if elected president in 2027, promising to establish what he described as a better governance structure.
The comments come as political parties and presidential aspirants intensify preparations for the 2027 election, with the economy, poverty, governance and the performance of the Tinubu administration expected to remain major campaign issues.
