Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has restrained the Zamfara State House of Assembly, the Chief Judge of the State and others from effecting the impeachment of the state’s Deputy Governor, Mahdi Gusau.
While ruling in an ex-parte motion brought by the Peoples Democratic Party on Monday, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, said the House of Assembly should halt any planned impeachment.
The PDP dragged the Governor Bello Matawalle to court over his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) arguing that Matawalle handed over the party’s mandate thereby contravening the Supreme Court’s ruling that declared that the APC had no candidate in the 2019 governorship elections.
However, Deputy Governor Gusau decided not to defect to the APC increasing tension over rumored impeachment.
In the same ruling, Justice Egwuatu also stopped the Zamfara State House of Assembly from impeaching its other members who are still in the PDP.
The Zamfara State House of Assembly had, earlier this month, asked Deputy Governor Gusau to appear before its members on July 27 over a political rally he (Gusau) organised in the state.
