Convocation: 167 graduates bag first class degree honours in UNN

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Prof Oguejiofo Ujam has said that 167 students graduated with first class honours degrees in the institution’s 54th convocation ceremony.

Ujam said this in Nsukka on Friday during the conferment of bachelor’s degrees and diplomas of the university.

He explained that out of the total 9,821 graduating students, 167 graduates will be awarded first class honours, 3,485 would graduate with Second Class honours (Upper Division), 5,217 with Second Class honours (Lower Division), 739 with Third Class honours, 33 would graduate with Pass degrees, while 180 graduated in the unclassified category.

“I congratulate all graduating students for their dedication and commitment that made it possible for them to graduate today.

“I congratulate in a especially way their parents and guardians especially for choosing UNN as a university to invest in their children’s and wards’ education.

“UNN will continue to do its best to be among the best in the country,” he said.

The acting VC said his administration in the past five months had made significant achievements such as providing access roads, clean water for students’ hostel and staff quarters.

“Through an alumnus of the university, we now have a 50,000-litre tank that provides water for the institution,” he said

Ujam disclosed that one of the challenges bedevilling the institution is power supply which he laments that the monthly public electricity bill of the university is not less than N200m

“This financial burden significantly impacts our operational capacity and resource allocation,” the VC lamented.

“UNN is making every effort to ameliorate the problem as we have signed an MoU with the Rural Electrification Agency for 10 megawatts of electricity,” he said.

In a remark, Mr Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of UNN Governing Council, while congratulating the graduating students reminded them that their journey of life has just started, and urged them to be focused, prayerful, diligent, hardworking, honest and good ambassadors of the institution.

In an interview with one of the graduated students, Igwebuike Kenechi Kester, who graduated with First Class, Cumulative Grade Point Average,
(CGPA) 4.59, Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, UNN, commended the management of the institution for making the school environment enabling for teaching and learning.

He expressed his deep gratitude to his parents, Mr and Mrs Kingsley Igwebuike for their love, support, and sacrifices throughout his academic journey, as well as his lecturers and supervisor who nurtured, trained and guided him morally and academically.

“I commend the management and staff of UNN for making the institution environment enabling for research, teaching and learning, no doubt the institution is one of the best public universities in Nigeria.

“I thank my parents for their unwavering support and belief in me, which helped me reach this milestone. Your guidance and encouragement have been invaluable. I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me throughout my academic journey.

“To my supervisors and lecturers thank you so much for the significant role you all played in my academic and personal development,” he said.

UNN Registrar, Dr Ngozi Nnebedum announced
Mba Angel Ifechukwu and Nwaigbo John Cherechim, both from the Faculty of Engineering as the Joint Best Graduating Students, with a CGPA 4.94.
