The Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has continued to strengthen its position as one of the emerging leading private universities in Kano State and the North-West, with growing recognition for its academic standards, research profile, infrastructure and student development.
According to Fateema Abubakar, a student of Nursing Sciences at the institution, the university’s commitment to quality education, academic excellence, discipline and character development has increasingly attracted students seeking a modern and internationally oriented educational experience.
Fateema, in her recent opinion article, highlighted MAAUN’s growing reputation, which, according to her observations from students and stakeholders, goes beyond its physical infrastructure to include the quality of teaching, practical training and opportunities provided to students across various disciplines.
She stated:
“The achievements of its students have also continued to reflect the institution’s emphasis on academic and professional development.
“In 2025, a Mass Communication student of the university received recognition at the Campus Journalism Awards held at the Transcorp Hilton, highlighting the quality of training provided by the institution in communication, journalism and creative writing.
“Students of Nursing Sciences have equally continued to demonstrate competence and professionalism during clinical experiences in hospitals and healthcare institutions across the country.”
She also stressed that the university has invested in building a strong academic workforce comprising academics and professionals committed to teaching, research, mentorship and student development.
In addition to academic excellence, Fateema noted that MAAUN’s emphasis on academic integrity, discipline, respect for human dignity and a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and harassment has contributed to an environment designed to promote learning and personal development.
She said:
“One of the university’s notable recent milestones is its growing presence in international higher education assessments.
“MAAUN was among the Nigerian universities featured in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings. The ranking featured 24 Nigerian universities, comprising 17 public and seven private institutions.

“The university was also recognised in the 2025 AD Scientific Index, an international academic ranking and indexing platform that assesses universities and researchers based on indicators of scientific productivity and scholarly impact.
“MAAUN was ranked second among Nigerian universities in the 2025 AD Scientific Index, behind Covenant University.”
The recognition, according to observers, underscores the university’s growing academic and research profile and demonstrates that its development extends beyond physical infrastructure.
“For a relatively young private university, its appearance in the THE rankings and strong performance in the AD Scientific Index represent significant milestones in its quest to compete within Nigeria’s increasingly competitive higher education sector.
“Beyond academics, MAAUN has also become an important part of the socio-economic development of its host community in Hotoro, Kano.
“The university’s presence has attracted students, academics, businesses, housing developments and other economic activities, contributing to the growth and transformation of the surrounding community.”
Abubakar said the university’s growing reputation is increasingly being noticed outside Kano.
According to her, whenever she travels and identifies herself as a student of MAAUN, people often express interest in the institution, which she described as an indication of the recognition the university is gaining.
She said MAAUN’s philosophy goes beyond awarding degrees, as students are also encouraged to develop discipline, good character, respect for others and a sense of responsibility to society.
Abubakar expressed pride in being a student of the institution, describing its growing recognition in national and international academic assessments as an indication of its ambition to raise the standard of private university education in Kano and the North-West.
