Tyson Fury’s showdown with Anthony Joshua could be held at Wembley Stadium – providing local authorities agree to stage the fight at a later time.
The long-time heavyweight rivals are set to go head-to-head in November – a fight which has been over a decade in the making. Fury returned to the ring back in April after a year hiatus, defeating Arslanbek Makhmudov in front of over 60,000 fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Just moments later, Fury demanded a clash with Joshua – who was sitting ringside – but the latter refused to engage in all of the theatrics. Just days later, the two stars agreed to a fight and are expected to meet in the middle of the ring before the end of the year.
England’s most iconic stadium, Wembley, has been mooted to host the monumental occasion, but the SiFO Stadium in Los Angeles and Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena have also been rumoured as potential venues. Saudi boxing supremo Turki Alalshikh revealed earlier this week that he wants to stage the fight at a time that works for a global audience.
England, but we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America. If they allowed us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England. It is about the time and viewership. We will talk with the mayors and Prince Abdullah (bin Khaled bin Sultan).”
Both Fury and Joshua are set to compete in respective tune-up fights later this month, and providing they both come away unscathed, their fight will be made official. Former two-time heavyweight world champion Fury is expected to take on Poland’s Mariusz Wach in Pattaya, Thailand, on July 24.
Joshua, on the other hand, will fight a day later – taking on unknown heavyweight contender Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. ‘AJ’ has not fought since knocking out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul back in December.
