Renowned Canadian comedian and actor, Martin Short has lost his eldest child and only daughter, Katherine Short, to suicide aged 42.
According to TMZ, Katherine was found dead at her residence in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles on Monday, February 23, after emergency responders were called to the scene around 6:41 pm local time.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled her death a suicide caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, with no other contributing factors listed.
Short’s family confirmed her demise in a statement.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” the statement reads.
Short, 75, has not publicly commented on his daughter’s passing beyond the family statement.
Born in 1983, Katherine was adopted by Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, along with her two younger brothers, Oliver and Henry.
Katherine earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Gender Sexuality Studies from New York University in 2006 before bagging a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
She pursued a career as a social worker in Los Angeles, dedicating her professional life to helping others, according to People.
Unlike her famous father, known for his iconic roles in films like Three Amigos and the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building, Katherine maintained a private life away from the spotlight.
A two-time Emmy winner, Short lost his wife, Nancy, to ovarian cancer in 2010.
