Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said his support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 is a personal decision borne out of conviction.
Abba, who is the Founder and Chairman of the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation (HBTO), stated this at the group’s press conference at the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretariat in Abuja.
He said he recognises that political decisions that differ from those of family members often attract public attention, but insisted that political conviction remains a matter of personal judgement.
Abba said, “I recognise that political decisions, particularly those that differ from the positions of individuals with whom one shares personal and family relationships, often attract considerable public attention. I am equally conscious that my own political decision may be viewed within this context.
“However, I wish to make one fundamental point: political conviction is a matter of personal judgement, conscience and the freedom of every individual to make independent choices.
“My decision to establish and lead the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation is a deliberate political choice, one I have made in my personal capacity and with a firm belief in the direction we have chosen to pursue. I hold no reservations about the right of others to their differing political opinions, just as I expect my own convictions to be respected.”
Abba, who campaigned for his father in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections, said he now believes in the reform agenda of the Tinubu administration.
“It’s not just because it’s my father. I don’t think I am antagonising him; I simply believe in the current government’s policies and the reforms taking place,” he said.
Abba cited the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) for interest-free student loans and start-up financing for graduates, investments in road and transportation infrastructure, increased Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations to states, and other interventions as reasons for his support.
He said HBTO was established to build a structured, inclusive and nationally coordinated grassroots movement to mobilise support for the President and the APC, and to take government policies beyond political gatherings into communities.
As part of its programmes, the group announced the provision of an initial fleet of 10 luxury buses to ease transportation challenges, starting from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja before expanding nationwide. It also announced plans for a two-million-man mobilisation march across the six geopolitical zones, beginning in Abuja.
When asked if he could deliver his father’s home state, Adamawa, for Tinubu, he said: “Yes, yes, yes. We are going to deliver Adamawa State.”
Abba formally joined the APC in January 2026. His father, Atiku Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in 2019 and 2023, is now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the January 16, 2027 election, where he is expected to challenge President Tinubu.
