A member of the House of Representatives, Leke Joseph Abejide, has launched a mobilisation drive to secure one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from Yoruba residents in Kano State in the 2027 elections.
Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency spoke on Saturday at an empowerment programme attended by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
He said he was dissatisfied with the over 500,000 votes President Tinubu polled in Kano in 2023, given that the Yoruba population in the state is estimated at five million.
“When I saw the result my father, President Tinubu, got in Kano in 2023, I felt ashamed. Not because he is not popular, but because I am the Asiwaju of about five million Yoruba people in Kano,” said Abejide who is the Asiwaju of Yoruba in Kano.
He said his target is to galvanise Yoruba votes from polling units to wards across the 44 local government areas to deliver a block vote for the Tinubu/Shettima ticket and all APC candidates.
As part of the programme, Abejide announced empowerment packages for widows and women, including food items, clothing, cash support, and N500 million non-interest loans through cooperative societies.
In his remarks, former Governor Yahaya Bello said the voting strength of non-indigenes in Kano should not be underestimated.
“In the last presidential election, we delivered nearly 500,000 votes for President Tinubu. That performance was not satisfactory and we must do better,” Bello charged, adding that infrastructure projects like the Kano-Abuja highway were evidence of the President’s commitment to the North” he sqrt⁰.
He called for political stability and equity, noting that after eight years of President Muhammadu Buhari from the North, President Tinubu should be allowed to complete eight years.
