Many people would want to be honoured but only few work either towards it or dream of it. No wonder an anonymous writer whose thought were found in a book was ascribed to an unknown aptly captured My thought when he said “Honor is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. “ It is the holy book that further throws more light and understanding into the word “ honour” when it says “Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.”. This is the type of personality the SUN publishing company, the publishers of the nations best daily newspaper “The SUN , found in the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service , Adewale Adeniyi for a unique award by honour as one of the receipient of the 2024 SUN special award. CG Kemi NANDAP, creating a new dawn in NIS
Her appointment was like an unexpected rain in a desert . Over the course of her career, she has held various positions within the NIS across Nigeria, including roles at the Murtala Muhammed International AirportCommand and Zone F Headquarters.Nandap was promoted to Assistant Comptroller-General and later to Deputy Comptroller-General, overseeing the Migration Directorate. In these roles, she worked on issues related to human trafficking, smuggling, and international migration cooperation.
In December 2023, she was appointed to lead the Passport and Other Travel Documents Directorate, where she oversaw the implementation of a reform to modernize Nigeria’s passport system. Sequel to all this she was appointed to head the agency on 20th of January 2024 and since then she has continued to improve every department of the agency by using the best hands in the system . Mrs NANDAPs style of rebranding reminds one of the former CGIS, Mr Muhammad Babandede who iniated various aggressive and ambitious reforms like the world class Technology building and the myraids of infrastructures adorning the Airport road headquarters of the NIS today. Mrs NANDAP who is putting round pegs in round holes, has started attracting far more projection and indeed commendation from stakeholders of immigration services across the country and in the diaspora for her intentional investment in human capacity building and staff welfare. For the first time in more than twenty years, arrears of transfer allowances running into billions have been cleared just like the back log of passport has become a thing of the past. Nandaps zero tolerance for corruption and indiscipline has equally led to correcting wrong activities that had hitherto attracted negativepublic audiometer to the agency. She has also started restructuring by posting capable hands to strategic positions, with an obvious interest in making the best use of past NIS media officers once they were elevated. Whilst she retained the highly experienced Dr Dotun Aridegbe as her Chief of Staff, the Controller General deployed another equally celebrated media expert, Tony Akuneme to man the ever busy Sokoto state border command, near Niger republic apparently due to the much talked about robust tech innovations initiated by Minister Tunji Ojo and quite recently, Deputy comptroller Kenneth Udoh has been sent to head the passport office in Akwa Ibom, one of the states prone to stories of Human trafficking and smuggling of migrants.
Indeed, the style of administration of the CG has also rubbed off on her lieutenants at the various passport offices across the country as third parties have literally disappeared. Stakeholders also talk about world class passenger clearance facilities and personnel decorum at major entry points especially the Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt and Lagos Airports.
