The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Patrick Areghan, has explained that no certificates nor exam materials were destroyed in last week’s fire at the council’s Yaba headquarters in Lagos.

WAEC’s national office in Yaba was on Wednesday engulfed in fire, which affected the second floor of the 12-storey building.

Insinuations making the rounds that candidates’ certificates and stored exam materials were affected by the inferno, which started by 6.40am, have been discribed as false.

Areghan also debunked claims that many WAEC staff sustained injuries in an attempt to escape during the early-morning fire.

His words: “God took perfect control. Just a small section of the second floor that does not house any security materials was affected.

“No records, no document was lost. No results, no certificates, no exam materials were lost. Above all, no life was lost. We praise his name.”
