In Igbo culture, when a daughter reaches maturity, having been groomed by her family, she is expected to introduce her spouse to her family.

Demonstrating her adherence to the values instilled by her parents, Dr. Chika Ihenakwe brought her fiancé home on October 11 as Igbo tradition demands. Chika’s fiancé, Austin Chidubem Ochi, a United States-trained mechanical engineer employed by Apple, an American multinational technology company, was warmly received.

The occasion, which ought to be a simple family affair, turned into a vibrant traditional celebration, with family, friends and well-wishers in attendance to celebrate the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Ochi.

The event commenced with the presentation of kolanut by Dr. Chika’s father, Barrister Emmanuel Ihenakwe.

As tradition dictates that the kolanut belongs to the traditional ruler, it is noteworthy that His Majesty, Eze Akuwueze Raphael Ikegwuruka, Ezeahurukwe II, the paramount ruler of Mgbirichi and Abakuruland, was in attendance.

In Igbo language, he offered prayers over the kolanut, bestowing blessings upon both families and invoking God’s guidance to fulfill the noble purpose that brought the young couple together in the institution of marriage.

Meanwhile, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Ochi, uncle to the groom, before introducing the family members present, observed a minute’s silence in honour of his late brother and the groom’s father, Austin Ochi, who recently passed away. He stated: “On his deathbed, he instructed that the preparations for his son’s marriage should be pursued to their logical conclusion,” which was why they had gathered. He then presented the traditional drinks as a symbol of their intentions.

The master of ceremonies, Mr. Solomon Ohiri, interrupted to request from Ochi the specific flower where Dr. Kachi Ihenakwe was mentioned. Chief Ihenakwe subsequently requested his daughter’s presence for confirmation.

Chika’s entrance into the arena was met with resounding applause and ovation, illuminating the space. The father then inquired: “Chika, do you accept Austin Ochi and his family’s request for a marital union? Shall we proceed to enjoy the drinks and kolanuts they presented?”

She nodded her pretty head and said: “Daddy, ṅuwanu,” which translates to an affirmative.

As a proud father, Chief Ihenakwe had every reason to celebrate Chika, a medical doctor who, along with her siblings, upheld cherished Igbo values despite being United States citizens.

The event’s highlight was when Enyioha congratulated his son, Isiguzo Ihenakwe, on passing the Law School, and offered prayers for the couple’s future, blessing Chika and her fiancé as they plan their life together.
