The Young Christian Workers (YCW) Movement of St. Michael Catholic Church, Lanre, Igando, in the Isolo Deanery of the Lagos Archdiocese, yesterday, held a major free medical outreach to mark the inauguration of its new centre.
The outreach, which took place immediately after the formal inauguration of the St. Michael YCW Centre, saw over 400 residents of Igando New Town and its environs benefit from the free medical tests and drug distribution.
Medical tests offered included screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, malaria and hepatitis B. Residents, young and old, trooped into the church compound to take advantage of the life-saving services provided by the movement. The initiative was coordinated by the newly inaugurated members of the Centre, who emphasised that the outreach was their way of giving back to the community and reflecting the core YCW values of service to God and humanity.
“We are not just here to inaugurate a centre; we are here to touch lives,” said Adline Nneka Nwadike, the newly sworn-in Centre President. “As Christian workers, we believe that our faith must find expression in concrete action, especially in helping the vulnerable around us.” The medical outreach was executed in partnership with volunteer medical professionals and community health workers, who offered their time and expertise to serve residents throughout the day.
Earlier in the day, the inauguration of the new YCW centre was presided over by Rev. Fr. Edwin Saviour Patrick, the Assistant Parish Priest of St. Michael Catholic Church. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Gideon, who represented the Archdiocesan President of YCW Lagos Chapter, Maureen Ogamba. He was supported by Joseph, the Assistant Coordinator for Isolo Deanery, who administered the oath of office to the newly appointed executives.
The inauguration and outreach, held under a spirit of celebration and commitment, marked a new beginning for YCW activities in the area and was described by church leaders and parishioners as a welcome development and a blessing to the community.
Local residents expressed deep appreciation for the free healthcare services, describing them as timely given the rising cost of medical treatment and limited access to health facilities in the area.
With the successful launch, the St. Michael Catholic Church YCW Centre has set a strong example of leadership rooted in compassion, action and spiritual responsibility; the core values that the group continues to uphold across the Archdiocese of Lagos.
