Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy and Colombian global icon Shakira delivered a memorable performance during FIFA’s inaugural World Cup final halftime show on Sunday.
The duo entertained millions of football fans worldwide as Spain defeated Argentina to claim the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
The two award-winning artistes performed the tournament’s official anthem ‘Dai Dai’ at the New York New Jersey Stadium during the interval of the final, marking a historic moment as FIFA introduced a Super Bowl-style halftime entertainment show for the first time in World Cup history.
Their performance capped a star-studded spectacle that also featured American pop legend Madonna, who opened the entertainment segment, while Canadian singer Justin Bieber thrilled fans with an acoustic rendition of Everything Hallelujah.
Adding to the occasion, Brazilian football greats Ronaldo and Ronaldinho drove onto the pitch to loud applause from the capacity crowd.
The duo, members of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad, had been prominent figures throughout the tournament despite the Selecao’s exit in the Round of 16.
The halftime show, curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, lasted 27 minutes and 19 seconds, significantly exceeding the traditional 15-minute halftime interval prescribed under the Laws of the Game.
The extended entertainment formed part of FIFA’s efforts to introduce new fan engagement initiatives during the expanded 48-team tournament.
