Former service chiefs and retired military generals have resolved to do everything within their powers to ensure the re-election of President Bola Tinubu during next year’s presidential election.
The ex-service chiefs, comprising Lucky Irabor, the incumbent Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonisakin, and other retired army generals like Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa (Rtd), General Abdulmalik Jibrin (Rtd), Major General A.T Ibrahim, General Sarkin Yaki Bello (Rtd) among others assembled in the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Security Committee, described President Tinubu’s re-election as non-negotiable.
Speaking during the formal inauguration of the PCC Security Committee in Abuja, the former service chiefs and military generals promised to ensure the security of the country during the elections.
According to the Minister of Defence, Musa, the biggest responsibility before the members of the committee is to ensure safety and security both during the campaign period and the election proper.
“We must understand the dynamics where we are. A lot of the opposition would want to use economy, insecurity to drive a lot of issues on the ground. So, the issue of security is paramount, and key to our success. In performing our task, we have to be very mindful that we have to have foresight, be able to have that linkage between all the regions, all the states, together.
“Working as a team is the most critical aspect for us, because if we are divided, we can’t achieve anything. I am happy to see from the fact that we have very capable personnel that will make that difference.
“So, I want to commend and remind us that the job is not starting. It’s something that will continue even after the elections. That is where it is very critical. The return of Mr President is not an issue that we should even start worrying about, because God willing, he is coming back. It is how we make that happen and provide that enabling environment for it to happen.

“That is what we should be thinking about. And that’s why it’s very important that as we have started today, after this inauguration, everybody should know that he has a role to play in what’s going on,” he charged.
Enumerating the task, Musa said: “The survival of Nigeria is critical to all of us, because our families and everybody is here, and we must do everything possible to ensure that Nigeria is safe and secure, our campaigns are peaceful and safe, because it is the most critical aspect of what we do.”
“The President has done remarkably well. We are not even talking so much about what he has done. It is important that we work together with the Information Directorate to spread these things for individuals to understand what is going on, because social media is going to play a critical aspect in what we are doing.
“I want to appreciate everyone, and to assure you that from the Ministry of Defence, we are going to provide all the necessary support that we can to make sure our job is made easy,” he said.
In his own remarks, Major General A.T Ibrahim said: “The task ahead of us requires synergy of all of us and the services that are out there. We have to ensure the fact that our principal, the President, Commander-in-Chief, President Tinubu, is returned in 2027 to run for the second tenure. And for us to achieve that, we must show strong resolution and strong support by linking all our security agencies from the highest level up to the point of the polling units that we are going to be interacting with.
“It’s not going to be an easy task for all of us, but the President has shown that we are capable of doing this job. That’s why he incorporated us to do this. And I believe we shall not fail the President, come 2027, we must ensure his total voting in the Vote Campaign election,” he charged.
For Olonisakin, the Chairman, Operations and Field Coordination of the Directorate: “We have been tasked and charged to deliver. And it should be our duty to do the needful. I wish our principal a good sail back to Aso Rock.”
Equally giving assurance in his remarks, Major General Famadewa (Rtd), the Special Adviser on Homeland Security, said: “We will make sure that the campaign process and every other thing up to the election is secured. Without security, what you have is chaos and chaos is not what we need at this time. Our job is to make the process safe and secure, so that we can have the desired objectives. We will do all things, wherever we have to go, we will be there and do all we need to do. And I want to wish everybody well, that at the end of everything, we will gather again like this to celebrate both the victory and, of course, a very safe and secure process.”
