Borrowing: Nigeria’s new policy edge

FEMI LOGO 2

This government certainly has its own edge. Just like any other. It is excelling in borrowing. That seems the only area where it is aggressive.

It is its cardinal programme, a policy edge. It does not pretend or feign ignorance about it. The reason it pursues it with belligerence. And all the combativeness it could muster.

They are ruthless and reckless in their actions and inactions. The situation is grim. And grieving too!

Yet, they remain forever stubborn, adamant. They bluntly refuse to see what we see. It is their deliberate choice. They have drawn a parallel line. Never to align, agree with us.

They vow our path will never cross for good. The reason they opt for falsehood, falsification, fabrication and pure fiction. They hang delicately on to them.

They keep on dishing out blatant lies and untruth. Deception has become a delicacy they can’t do without. Sophistry is their best pastime. Showcasing fallacies as facts.

They dwell in the realms of fancy and fantasy. They build their twisted argument on nothingness. It has no foundation but delusion. They are empty from “top to bottom.” They remain shameless all the years of their lives.

Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, came knocking again last Wednesday. It was business as usual. He was enthusiastic to show off the scorecard of President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime.

He did it with all the strength in him. He swore that doubters of the score sheet would soon be left “breathless.” What exactly did Lai mean? He proudly explained:

“In the din of politicking, naysayers have attempted to play down the massive and unprecedented achievements of this administration.”

He then beat his chest testifying: “But the series we are starting (today) will leave them breathless as we cover all the achievements in the various sectors, because we have so much to showcase.” Really? Interesting!

Lai is pained we refused to trust him: “Despite attempts in some circles to downplay the achievements of this administration, I have no scintilla of doubt that history will be fairer and posterity will be kind to us.” Great doubt!

Lt-General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma is our all-time witness. He served as Chief of Army Staff in the Murtala/Obasanjo military junta. That was between 1975 and 1979.

Twenty years later, he made a stunning comeback from retirement. He dazed bookmakers to become Minister of Defence. He did that dramatically again under Obasanjo in 1999 as civilian president.

This time around, he came to our rescue. He stoutly stood up to Lai’s ranting. He took him on headlong. Lai had laboured in vain to change the narrative.

But the soldier in Danjuma would not allow that. He meticulously punctured Lai’s fairy tale. He threw a huge spanner in the works. And that sealed it!

Danjuma was amazed and amused where Lai got his brainwave. He must have wondered in his inner mind: “How will he (Lai) explain the grief and grim that stare us in the face daily?”

His details: “Our country is under siege by armed bandits. When a few years ago I warned that the armed forces are either not capable or unwilling to protect us, and that we must defend ourselves, the first denial came from the defence ministry who set up a kangaroo panel and invited me to come and testify. I did not go.” What followed?

“They wrote the report, which said I was only speculating and there was no evidence. Now there is evidence. The whole country is overrun.”

He confirmed our fears: “And these foreign invaders are not even Muslims. A lot of the casualties are Muslims. They were allowed to come into the country by our government.” This is damning!

Not done yet, he painted a grimmer picture: “Right now, we are all sitting ducks. These people are armed to the teeth with weapons of mass destruction but we don’t have them. We have the numbers and the land belongs to us. They are trying to colonize us and take over our land. Your majesty, you must unite our people to defend themselves.”

Danjuma was speaking directly to his people at the grassroots. It was in Wzukari, Taraba State. The occasion was apt and auspicious for his outpouring. A new Aku Uka of Wukari, Manu Ishaku Adda Ali Matakhitswen 1, was receiving the Staff of Office.

He was blunt: “I will not give you arms. Find out how the people who have them got them. Use the same means to acquire arms and defend yourselves.

“This beautiful land called Nigeria is being brought to ruin by absolutely useless criminals. How do they get here? We know some of them may even be here.”

His final words: “My prayer is that God Almighty that has given us this land will give us the courage to face this enemy and chase them out. This we must do, otherwise Nigeria is finished.” God forbid!

These uncharitable characters won’t allow you some peace. They will find a way to provoke you. They’ll put their filthy fingers in your mouth. And you will be forced to vomit.

This is exactly what Lai & Co. is sweating hard to achieve. And they have attained that to a certain reasonable level. Courtesy: Gullible and naïve Nigerians.

They are latching heavily on our weakness. They are feasting ferociously on our lapses. And they seem to be having their wicked way. SAD!

Peace has eluded them. So also sleep. They are burning all manner of candles. Yes, with funny shapes, shades and colours. Day and night! They are eternally restless.

See the frightening budget they thrust on our fragile laps for next year. Budget: N20.5 trillion. Expected revenue: N9.7 trillion. Government to do what it knows how to do the best. It plans to borrow N8.8 trillion.

Government will do that without thinking twice. It won’t even look back. Our current debt profile is N42 trillion. It’s already threatening our existence.

So? By the time this regime is finished with us. Our new debt toga will be an alarming N50.8 trillion. We’ll be truly “breathless.” No apologies whatsoever to Lai. You would want to curse them.

This is the ugly narrative at hand. And they are hell-bent on it. They want to continue with this repulsive plight. They care less if we are injured or brutally bruised. They are forging on unperturbed.

They continue to borrow for the very wrong reasons: To pay salaries; to service the existing debts at over 80 per cent of our total budget; and for consumption. Who does that?

That is the huge tragedy. We don’t need continuation of this in any form. We want a clean and clear departure. That is what we earnestly desire from our despicable past.

Yes, a complete break. Not this endless penchant for borrowing. It never helped us. And it won’t now. Not even in the farthest future.

We have been running ourselves aground many times over. Our rulers always lead the pack. They did it nearly eight years ago.

They promised “change.” They really did effect some changes. Change they gave us. Again for the wrong reason! Why? We failed to interrogate their type of change.

Now. Come one more time. Let’s reason together. Let’s abandon our old and odd ways of doing things. The earlier we oblige ourselves this, the best for us all.
