Border closure: Kebbi Customs generates N99.28m

  • Seizes 138 packs of tramadol, others worth N51.499m

The Kebbi State Area Command has generated N99,282,547 million in the month of July as well as intercepted 138 packs of tramadol and other illegal items worth N51,499,314 million.

Comptroller of Customs in the state Dr Ben Oramalugo, who confirmed this while briefing reporters at the Command’s headquarters Birnin Kebbi, said the remarkable achievements was due to sustained synergy with relevant units and other securities agencies at border stations.

According to him, “the Command, in its effort to surpass its last month’s achievement which was affected by festive activities, has decided various means of revenue generation revival. Though, the coup d’etat in our neigbouring Niger Republic and subsequent border closure of our borders with the affected West African country, has sharply affected our revenue generation drive.

‘”The Command still managed to rake in a whooping sum of N99,82,547 in the month of July alone,which is 113% of our monthly revenue target.”

Oramalugo while speaking on the anti smuggling activities, disclosed that due to the alertness of his officers and high morale,led to the 28 seizures recorded within the period under review.

He stated that, 238 packs of tramaking/Tramadol of 225mg, 81 tablet size of cannibis sativa,used Toyota Camry 2007 model used as a means to convey the items were impounded.

Oramalugo also disclosed that 46 bags of foreign parboiled rice of 50kg each and 49 bags of rice of 25kg each, 88 bale’s of second hands clothing,4,200 litres of PMS and 535 litres of diesel as well as 37 kegs if vegetable oil among others were intercepted by his gallant officers.

“The Duty Paid Value if the seized items is N51,499,314. You may not fail to observe that notable among the seizures are cannabis sativa and hard drugs worth N22,132,077 which will be handed over to NDLEA shortly after this briefing,” he said.

He added that after they enforced the closure of the borders in accordance with the ECOWAS directives, the Command embarked on the sensitization to border’s communities including Kamba to ensure compliance to the border closure sanction and educate the people the reason behind it.

While receiving the siezed drugs,the Commandant of the NDLEA,Kebbi State Command, Sule Usman commended the State Custom’s Service for their gallant efforts to rid the state off illegal drugs.
