The Chairperson, Emergency Support Programme of Victims Support Fund, (VSF), Mrs Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, disclosed that the organisation has donated N1 billion worth of interventions to Benue state.
Akerele-Ogunsiji disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Anyiin, Logo Local Government Area, (LGA) of the state.
According to her, the interventions which cut across food, health consumables and non-health consumables were donated to Primary Healthcare Clinics, (PHCs) in Benue.
“The non health consumables donated to health clinics include solar panels and inverters as well as provision of water among others,” Akerele-Ogunsiji said.
She explained that the motive was to cushion the effect of attacks on Benue communities, stressing that 21 out of 23 LGAs in the state had experienced one form of attack or the other hence the need to support the displaced persons.
She lamented that out of the 21 LGAs that experienced attacks, Logo was the most hit, adding that as such it needed more help or intervention.
“The Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) there need more help. The IDPs in the area are about 5,000 but we are only catering for 1,000 of them.
“I will use this opportunity to call on non profit organisations and well meaning Nigerians as well as International agencies to come to the aid of the IDPs in Benue.
“The IDPs are not only in camps or concentrated in camps. Where they stay is dependent on the peculiarity of the environment.
“This has greatly affected the socioeconomic life of the people who are predominantly farmers.
“This is really depressing. Zaki Biam which is the major depot of yam in Africa is affected because most people in that area no longer go to farm,” she said.
She urged organisations and good spirited individuals to do more to enable them go back to their ancestral home.
