Bauchi governor creates 13 new emirates, Zaar chiefdom
  • Warns against politicising the new laws or inciting divisions

From Paul Orude, Bauchi

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has assented to the Bauchi State Chieftaincy, Appointment and Deposition Law 2025 to announce the creation of new emirates and Zaar chiefdom, as well as districts, bringing the number of emirates to 19.

The governor disclosed this on Tuesday at the Exco Chamber of Government House, after assenting to the law, along with three other laws passed by the state assembly. Mohammed had earlier received them from the State Assembly led by the Speaker, Abubakar Y Suleiman.

They are the Bauchi State Chieftaincy/Appointment and Deposition Law, the Bauchi State Law to Repeal the Creation of Seyawa Chiefdom Law 2011 and the Creation of Sayawa Chiefdom/Amendment Law 2015 to provide for the enactment of the Zaar Chiefdom Law 2025 in Bauchi State and other matters relating thereto.

He disclosed that the new emirates are Bura, with headquarters at Bura; Dambam with headquarters in Dambam; Darazo with headquarters in Darazo; Duguri with headquarters at Yuli; Gamawa with headquarters at Gamawa.

Others are Giade with headquarters at Giade; Toro with headquarters at Toro; Warji with headquarters at Katanga Warji; Ari with headquarters at Gadan-Maiwa; Jamma’a with headquarters at Nabordo; Lame with headquarters at Gumau; Bununu with headquarters at Bununu; Lere with headquarters at Lere; and Zaar with headquarters at Mhrim.

He directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, in collaboration with the Secretary to the State Government, to immediately gazette and distribute copies of the laws establishing the new emirates and chiefdom, as well as districts, to the public and the security agencies.

“Let me use this opportunity to issue a clear and firm warning: This administration will not tolerate any attempt to undermine, obstruct or to politicise the implementation of these laws,” he warned.

“Any person or group of persons found inciting divisions, rancour, and spreading misinformation or attempting to disrupt peace will face the full consequences of the law.

“The law enforcement agents represented today are fully empowered to act decisively to maintain peace and order.

“Furthermore, any government official, leader who acts contrary to the spirit of this reform or engages in conduct capable of undermining this objective will face appropriate disciplinary action.”

The governor emphasised that his actions are driven by the fear of God and accountability to God in creating the new emirates, chiefdom and districts, adding that his leadership did it with humility, not cowardice.

He said the report of Hamza Koshe Akuyam committee on creation of emirates and chiefdom and districts in the state, which was submitted to the governor and subsequently the state assembly that paved the way for the development, was more than a report.

“It is more than an end. It is the beginning of a process.”

Earlier, the Speaker of the State Assembly, Abubakar Y Suleiman, expressed gratitude to the governor for assenting to the laws, saying it shows his steadfast leadership style of affirming the people’s will.

Suleiman also praised the people of the state for their robust engagements, saying they provided framework for the creation of additional emirates, districts and chiefdom.

He said although the creation of new emirates is sensitive, the development is designed to bring government and traditional leadership close to the people.

“The law provides for appointment and deposition to ensure transparency and due process,” he stated.

“The law also provides guidelines for maintenance of the traditional institutions.”

The speaker stated that the public support for the creation of new emirates reaffirmed the people’s endorsement and thanked the governor for his bold step.
