Basketball superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo has waded into the long-running debate about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo that has polarised football for so long.

Giannis, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the United States, voiced his opinion during the 2026 NBA All-Star Weekend media day on Saturday.

“I think Messi is a pure talent. Pure talent, and with hard work and discipline throughout his career and consistency of being at the top, he’s probably the best player of all time,” Giannis said.

However, the Greek Freak, as he is popularly called, said he personally identifies more with Ronaldo, citing the Portuguese forward’s mindset and emphasis on discipline, body care, and longevity in the sport.

“For me, I relate and get closer to people that I’m similar to. Hard work, discipline, taking care of your body, being consistent for many years.

“He’s 41 years old now, still playing at a high level. So my mindset is closer to Cristiano Ronaldo’s mindset,” the two-time NBA MVP said.

Messi, 38, currently plays for Inter Miami in the MLS after a famed career with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, where he won eight Ballon d’Or awards and led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title.

At 41, Ronaldo plies his trade with Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League after dominating Europe with Real Madrid, Manchester United and Juventus, winning five UCL trophies and five Ballon d’Ors.
